The completion of the first human genome sequence some 16 years ago generated a plethora of fundamental knowledge about who we are. Importantly, this international effort resulted and augmented the necessary innovations and technologies that now allow us to sequence one complete human genome in approximately 12 minutes. In this presentation, we will discuss some of the historical aspects of the human genome project, its importance, before we dive into the relationships between the current knowledge on human diseases and our health. We conclude this story by deliberating the basic ethical and social issues and responsibilities that derive from this vast amount of information.
